FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an effective form of health care that has evolved into a complete and holistic medical system. Practitioners of acupuncture and Chinese medicine have used this noninvasive medical system to diagnose and help millions of people get well and stay healthy. It is a safe, effective and drug free therapy that has helped a wide variety of common ailments and problems.

An acupuncturist will place fine, sterile needles at specific acupoints on the body. This activates the body's Qi and promotes natural healing by enhancing the body's own recuperative power. It can improve overall function and well-being of the body, mind, emotions and spirit.

What is Qi?
Qi (pronounced "chee") is a vital energy in all living things, from the tallest tree to the smallest atom.
It is a combination of energies, mixed together from our food, air and constitution.
A person's health is influenced by the quality, quantity and balance of Qi.

What is a meridian?
Meridians are like rivers inside the body. They are the rivers where Qi flows inside of us. As it flows through every cell, tissue, organ and system , via these meridians, it nourishes, supports and energizes them.

What should I expect during a treatment?
During the initial exam a full health history will be taken as well as an examination of both your tongue and pulses. This is to determine where the Qi is blocked and needs to be balanced.
Where the needle is inserted some people experience a sensation of energy spreading and moving. This is the Qi sensation. It is a good sign that the treatment is working. After treatment you may feel both relaxed and energized.

Do the needles hurt?
The sensation caused by the acupuncture needles varies. Some people feel a little pain as the needles are inserted, but most people feel no pain at all. The needles are tiny, just a little larger than a dog's whisker or a human hair.

How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments will vary from person to person. Some experience relief immediately; others may take months to achieve results. Chronic conditions usually take longer to heal than acute ones. A series of treatments over a month will show significant changes.

Will my insurance pay?
Insurance coverage varies from provider to provider and from state to state. Contact your insurance provider to learn what kind of care is covered.
Here are a few questions to ask:
1) Will my plan cover acupuncture?
2) How many visits per calendar year?
3) Do I need a referral?
4) Do I have a co-pay?
5) Do I have a deductible? If so, has it been met?

What type of schooling do acupuncturists get?
Today, acupuncturists receive 3 to 4 years of extensive and comprehensive graduate training at nationally certified schools. All acupuncturists must pass a national exam and meet strict guidelines to practice in each state.

What are the different styles of Acupuncture?
As acupuncture evolved over the years in different parts of the world, a number of styles emerged. Each one differs in its diagnostic protocol and treatment modality. However, all styles aim to rebalance and harmonize our lives.
The following is a list of several styles:
Five Element Acupuncture
Traditional Chinese Acupuncture
